Sligo County Council took in charge the Woodville Housing estate in 2014 and soon discovered that the existing pumps not only blocked on a regular basis but they could not operate fast enough in times of heavy rainfall to prevent the sump from overflowing with surface water ingress.
The Council called in DPS technical sales personnel to make an assessment of the situation. DPS reviewed the original specification for the estate and investigated the actual equipment and pipe-work installed.
They discovered that the 50mm pipe-work was too small for the existing standard impeller pumps with respect to passing rags and that the pumps were under-sized for dealing with heavy rainfall. DPS recommended Landia DG 50 5.5 kW Chopper pumps to chop the rags to a size that would be passed through the 50mm pipe-work but also be big enough to deal with heavy rainfall. The problem was that the existing pump pedestals needed to be changed and just as , if not more importantly, the power supply had to be upgraded by the ESB to three phase to accommodate the Landia units.
On further investigation of the sump it was discovered that the pump pedestals were integrated into the plastic sump floor. Based on the previous successes with Landia chopper units in Rosses Point, Strandhill and Riverton pumping stations, Sligo County Council up-graded the power supply and bought Landia installation kits for their new Landia chopper pumps. After studying the floor situation, the DPS installation team was able to propose a suitable modification to the sump plastic floor that would allow the Landia pedestals to be installed and not necessitate the purchase and installation of a new sump.
DPS was responsible for the installation of the pumping equipment on site. To ensure installation to OEM specification, our team worked with the OEM (Landia) supplier from the design stage to ensure that the pump hydraulic would cater for Sligo County Council’s requirements. Careful consideration was given to the choice of hydraulic at this site as the existing pumps were experiencing on-going blockage issues which was leading to significant downtime. The ultimate solution was the LANDIA DGI Chopper pump. Since commissioning, these pumps have been in operation without any blockages or downtime.
Having progressed from working with the design team to the supply and installation phase, DPS nominated a Project Manager who was the point of contact for Sligo County Council and any other contractos on site and was responsible for all communications from DPS to Sligo County Council and the project stakeholders.
The Project Manager was responsible for progress reporting to facilitate ‘live’ updating of the program schedule. The Project Manager was also responsible for the reports which, in addition to monitoring the schedule and milestone achievements, covered issues such as Health & Safety, quality and risk minimisation. The outputs fof the daily and monthly project meetings. were subsequently communicated to the DPS installation team and the OEM as required. The Project Manager was responsible for amending and implementing any charges required to the DPS Health & Safety and quality procedures while amending the delivery and installation schedule as necessary to ensure compliance with the delivery team requirements.

Having installed and commissioned the equipment on site as per the OEM requirements and in conjunction with the project stake holders, DPS then ‘snagged’ the site prior to handover to ensure there were no minor issues outstanding. Once the snagging process was complete, the final sign-off and close-out of the project was dealt with in a timely manner and with ultimate client satisfaction.
