EPS shortlisted for Sustainable Energy Awards 2011

About

Against stiff competition, the finalists for this year’s awards include EPS alongside other major users of energy.

On 24th November next, EPS will compete with some of the top organisations in the country for the ultimate outright award, competing against:-

  • Croke Park Stadium
  • The National Aquatic Centre
  • RTE
  • Dublin Port Company
  • EMC, Ovens
  • Novartis, Ringaskiddy

EPS will be demonstrating the significant energy savings that have been achieved at its operational sites in Dundalk and Drogheda wastewater treatment facilities.

EPS currently operates the treatment plants on behalf of Louth Co Council under a 20 year operate contract. The excellent work by the local team has led to a range of innovative plant optimisation and energy reducing initiatives which together are ensuring EPS continues to lower its carbon footprint and reduce its energy consumption.

Category C - Dundalk WwTP

Category I - Sustainable Energy Innovation Award

The second category in which EPS has been shortlisted is the Sustainable Energy Innovation Award. EPS is supporting Kerry Co Council in this award where a retrofit of an existing aeration system has led to significant savings in the treatment process. The development of this innovative aeration technology application has been developed by EPS during the period 2008-2011 as part of an Enterprise Ireland supported R&D programme.

Whilst benefiting the efforts of energy reduction for Kerry Co Council, the technology application has added benefits as it can be repeated at numerous sites throughout Ireland and the UK. EPS has completed many more retrofits for other local authority and industrial customers and is currently planning for other projects during 2012.

In fact, EPS has recently successfully achieved grant support for some of its industrial customers for specific energy reducing upgrade projects. EPS has facilitated the progress of a number of innovative projects with financial backing through SEAI and the Better Energy Workplaces 2011 upgrade programme.

This initiative, together with the award shortlistings for 2011, are ongoing rewards for the work and commitment of the EPS energy and environment committee and EPS employees implementing the energy saving innovations across our sites and in our designs.
